Southwestern Colorado joins SHARE

Durango, CO July, 2003 - SHARE Colorado is expanding to the Southwestern region of Colorado. Effective July 23, SHARE Colorado is picking up the food program locations being left behind by St. Mary’s Food banks.

“This is an excellent opportunity for SHARE” said Dann Aungst, Managing Director of SHARE Colorado. “It’s unfortunate that St. Mary’s decided to discontinue service in the region. June was their last month for food distribution. I’m delighted that we were able to put a plan into action this quickly and begin service in July.”

Starting with the July 23 food distribution, SHARE Colorado will serve the southwest Colorado region including Durango, Cortez, Pagosa Springs, Mancos, and Farmington, NM. This region adds to the already growing area serviced by SHARE Colorado, including New Mexico, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, and the rest of Colorado. The Durango Herald in Durango has been gracious enough to donate use of part of their warehouse once a month to assist SHARE with the food distribution. “Partnerships like this with the Durango Herald are what make a community great, they really care about their community” said Aungst.

The mission of Catholic Charities’ SHARE Colorado program is to help people stretch their grocery budget while also building community. They do this by offering pre-selected food packages and make them available for about 50% off the retail grocery store prices. The Basic regular package runs $20 and has 18-20 grocery items including 4-5 meats, 2-3 staple items, and 10-12 fresh produce items. The package is generally a $40-$45 retail value.

Anyone is eligible to participate in SHARE – there are no income or eligibility guidelines. SHARE asks that participants spend a couple of hours a month volunteering in the community. Participants can do anything from volunteering at their church, carpooling, being involved at local schools, helping at the SHARE food sites, or even something as simple as praying for someone else. SHARE just wants people to be involved in their community, and the reward for that is saving 50% on their groceries. SHARE helps feed both the body and the Spirit.

To participate in SHARE, go to any of their nearly 300 host locations to pre-order and later pick-up grocery orders about two weeks later. For more information on participating in SHARE or for other questions, call 303 428 0400 or 800 933 7427.

SHARE is also seeking additional host locations. Host site locations are generally churches, community centers, senior centers, and various community organizations. Call for more information on helping your site become a SHARE host location.

SHARE Colorado is a program of Catholic Charities of Denver.
